The Emma Community Ownership Project represents the coming together of different people, from different racial and ethnic backgrounds, to work together, along with local government and non-profits, to find new creative models for economic self-sufficiency in the new American economy. Their cooperative ownership of mobile homes and mobile home parks in their area as a gateway to permanent housing affordability offers an exciting new type of hedge against gentrification and loss of community. Their story of how the community came together and all the different innovative projects that have sprung from that collaboration, including the strong partnerships formed along the way, offers us all an inspirational guide to doing things differently and making it work, when you truly have neighbors helping neighbors.
